The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently announced “Hatch It!” a business competition re-branded by the Center of Innovation, focused on attracting any student of any major.
Director of Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Libby Santin further explained what the competition entails.
“…it’s really for early stage ideas, so you don’t have to have a very developed business plan, but you do need to have a good understanding that there will be a market for your product, for people to buy your product,” she said.
The application is a two-part process due Friday, Oct. 2 and is already out on the Gary W. Rollins College of Business’ website. The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship will choose between the top five to seven ideas, and those who are chosen will have ninety seconds to do a pitch in front of judges via zoom call, as well as having three minutes to answer any questions said judges might have.
Accepted participants for the competition will be notified by Thursday, Oct. 8. Santin also informed how the teams for competition would be set up.
“…We know that entrepreneurs do better when they’re in teams and so you have to have at least two people in a team…up to four people…” she explained.
The competition creators have set up rules for student to take into consideration. Those who have previously won first place are ineligible to compete, but those who have won second place in the past are open to participating. Also, students are permitted to team up with non-UTC students, as long as the lead submitter and idea pitcher are active UTC students.
The prize system is set up in a way that lets many students be rewarded. The first-place winner is awarded $2,000, while the second-place winner takes home $2,000. For those who make it to the live pitch but are not in second or first place, $50 will still be awarded in scrappy cash on their Mocs card.
The “Hatch It!” pitch competition will take place Via Zoom on Nov. 4 from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
