The UTC men’s golf team took to Cateechee Golf Course for a 54-hole event in Lake Hartwell, Ga., winning the J.T. Poston Invitational.
The format was the same as it was at the Scenic City Collegiate, that is, six starters played in two threesomes per team as a safety precaution due to the coronavirus.
Following their success at the Scenic City Collegiate, two Mocs made the lineup: A.J. Lintunen and Dominic Jones. They were joined by qualifiers Oliver Simonsen, Matt Jones, Leon Bader and Conner Nolan. Moritz Lammel played as an individual.
The Mocs started off strong on the first day of the J.T. Poston Invitational, turning in their first par or better of the season.
Tied for fourth after the first day, the Mocs boasted a solid 1-under 283.
Oliver Simonsen and Conor Nolan both produced 1-under 70s on the day. A.J. Lintunen added an even-par 71, while a 1-over 72 from both Matt Smith and Leon Bader rounded out the team total. Dominic Jones shot 75, and Moritz Lammel carded 73.
Following the first day, all five in the Mocs starting lineup were in the top 15 overall.
The second day of the J.T. Poston Invitational saw the Mocs produce the fourth-best round in program history. The team boasted a score of 10-under 274.
A.J. Lintunen carded a 65, his career-best as a Moc. Oliver Simonsen and Dominic Jones both saw 69s, and Matt Smith produced an even 71.
This historical day moved the Mocs to the top of the leaderboard with 11-under 557.
The last day of the tournament saw Chattanooga shoot 6-under 278. This gave the Mocs their first title since the 2018 Memphis Intercollegiate.
A.J. Lintunen set new career lows for 18 (65), 36 (136) and 54-hole score (207).
The Mocs put on a rather impressive display, as they were never over par. This 16-shot victory is the largest since the 2012 Southern Conference title. This is the 28th title in school history.
The Mocs will return to the course Oct. 12-13 at the Intercollegiate at the Grove in middle Tennessee.
