The UTC Tennis team participated in the Buck Bauldin Battle of the Boro tournament in Murfreesboro on October 9 and 10.
Their best performance came on day one when they scored five singles wins and two wins in doubles.
The day-one singles wins were headlined by Senior Turner Vogues, and Jacob Marshall who won their matches (6-4, 6-4) and [6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5)] respectively. Vogues and Marshall were also both parts of double wins with Vogues pairing with Simon Labbe to win 6-3 and Marshall also winning 6-3 with his partner Quinten Nevenhoven.
Coach Chuck Merzbacher was pleased with the team’s performance on day one, calling it, “a pretty solid day.”
Day two resulted in five singles wins for UTC and one doubles win. Freshman Quinten Nevenhoven led the way with wins in both singles and doubles. Nevenhoven and Marshall beat UAB duo, Parker Bradbury and Giovanni Pasini 7-6 and then took the tiebreaker 7-4.
Two other Mocs true freshmen got victories on day two with Peyton Gatti winning (6-4, 6-4), and Jordan McClure winning (6-3, 6-3) against their MTSU counterparts.
There was a slight drop off for UTC on the final day of competition as they took home three singles wins and one doubles win. Matches were moved inside due to inclimate weather.
Thomas Rodriguez and Peyton Gatti were dominant in their singles wins with Rodriguez winning (6-3, 6-3), and Gatti dropping just two games with a (6-1, 6-1) victory.
“Everyone is playing hard and getting some much-needed competition. I really like what I am seeing,” said coach Merzbacher as he seemed pleased with tournament action as a whole.
The Mocs will look forward to some home court advantage with the UTC Steve Baras Classic coming up October 16-18 at the UTC Tennis Center which will be the Mocs’ lone home event of the fall.
