The UTC women’s basketball team extended their win streak to five with a 68-56 win on the road at Furman Friday. This was the first of a two-game series.
The Mocs were led for the fourth time this year by senior forward Bria Dial. She contributed to the Mocs win with 19 points and four steals. Eboni Williams had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She added to this with three assists and a career-high five steals.
Abbey Cornelius also had 11 points to go along with a game-high four assists and three blocks. Dena Jarrells put eight on the board.
After a close first quarter that resulted in a UTC lead of 16-13, the Mocs manufactured a 16-0 run in the second that began with a 3-point play by Williams. This was two minutes into the quarter and gave the Mocs a 21-17 lead.
The next two baskets came from Williams and Morgan Hill. Dial and redshirt sophomore Brooke Hampel polished this off by quickly knocking down three 3-pointers. This gave the Mocs a lead of 34-17.
The Mocs didn’t let up after the half. With less than two minutes to go in the third, Jarrells knocked down a three that moved the game to 52-32, their largest lead of the game.
Furman put together a fourth-quarter comeback that was led by Tierra Hodges–who had a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. The Paladins went on an 11-3 run, closing the game to 66-56 with under a minute left to play.
The effort from Furman wasn’t enough. Chattanooga held on and took a 68-56 win at Timmons Arena. This win improved UTC’s record to 7-4 and 2-0 in the SoCon. The reverse is true for Furman who dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in SoCon play.
