The UTC community is mourning the loss of twenty-year-old wrestler, Zeke Washington, whose death was confirmed on Monday, April 5. The cause of death remains unknown.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Zeke’s family, teammates, coaches, support staff and the entire wrestling program during this difficult time,” UTC wrestling said in a tweet on Monday. “Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as we all mourn the passing of one of our own.”
Washington was a freshman from Tulsa, Oklahoma who had tremendous success at Owasso High School, where he graduated in 2019. He posted an impressive record of 31-3 as a junior and a 32-5 record as a senior. Not surprisingly, he was a two-time state runner-up while at Owasso.
This success would have no doubt carried on throughout his collegiate career. Washington was featured on a gomocs.com “Meet The Newcomer” series where UTC Head Coach, Kyle Ruschell had nothing but positive affirmations to say about him.
“Zeke comes here with a great work ethic and attitude,” Ruschell stated. “He’s a workhorse and does what is asked of him.”
There has been a GoFundMe started to help with the funeral costs that has already surpassed its goal of $10,000.
“By now most of you have probably heard of the untimely passing of Zeke Washington, shortly after losing his mom, Sandy Washington,” the campaign states. “Joe and the Washington family has experienced an enormous amount of loss in the last 4 months.”
As the UTC community deals with this tragedy — student-athletes especially — UTC grief counselors are offering their support.
“Grief counselors are available to help Mocs’ student-athletes during this difficult time,” the University said. “Information on a memorial service in Zeke’s hometown of Tulsa, Okla., will be announced as it becomes available.”
