The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team participated in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in northern California on Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8.
On the first day of the tournament the Mocs shot 17-under 551 over 36 holes. That puts the quintet in sixth, 12 shots behind Pepperdine in the lead at 539.
St. Mary’s was in second at 544 followed by tournament host Cal (546), Boise State (549) and Long Beach State (550) were in front of Chattanooga. San Diego State and San Joe State tied for seventh with 554.
Oliver Simonsen, Ooltewah, Tenn., led the morning round with a 4-under 67. He was supported by Matt Smith, Athens, Ala., 69 and Mortiz Lammel, Ismaning, Germany, 70. Connor Nolan, Corona, Calif., had the drop score with 74 as well as 67 in the afternoon.
The lead score came from Will Porter, Arbroath, Scotland, with 66, while Smith improved a stroke to 68. Simonsen added 72 to total 273, while Lammel dropped a 79.
That made for an impressive day with a search through the record book. The second round 273 is the lowest 18 since Oct. 14, 2013 with 273 over the second 18 at the Autotrader Collegiate.
On Tuesday Porter tied for 12th shooting a disappointing career-low 206. Smith and Simonen shot under par with 211 (-2) which tied for 31st. Lammel was next on the team scoreboard with 222 followed by Nolan at 224. Pepperdine ran away with the team title at 809. That was 16 ahead of host Cal (825) and 17 clear of St. Mary’s (826).
Up next men’s golf will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to participate in the Grandover Collegiate on October 27 and 28.
