Commentary: Game of Thrones trailer

By Kirsten Raper, Assistant News Editor–

It may finally be spring, but winter is here with the new season seven Game of Thrones trailer that was released by HBO on March 30.

The trailer, which is roughly a minute a half long, does not contain a lot of action; however, it definitely got me feeling excited for the upcoming season, which premieres on July 16.

For those who are still catching up on the last six seasons, don’t worry. This commentary will specifically focus on my opinion of the trailer that was released so as to not give anything away because quite frankly, I hate spoilers.

When the trailer begins, we are introduced to the sound of footsteps and the image of a person’s shadow creeping closer and closer. We immediately find out that this person is Jon Snow, who is shown walking down a hallway. The camera then pans over to show Daenerys Targaryen and then Cersei Lannister also walking down similar hallways. All three of them are stone-faced, and they look ready to face off for the Iron Throne.

The characters walk for half of the trailer, which was kind of annoying, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted to skip ahead to find out what happens at the end (but I didn’t!).

However, finally, after what seems like an eternity of walking, the characters each come to the throne rooms of their own kingdoms. Then, they all sit on their respective thrones. This is the moment where we see Cersei sit on the Iron Throne, and it does not look like she is willing to give it up anytime soon.

My favorite part of the trailer is the end, and the only thing I could think to myself while watching it was, “Woah that was intense.” We see Cersei exhale this kind of foggy breath that you can usually replicate yourself on an extremely cold day. We are then left with a haunting image of one of the Night King’s piercing blue eyes, which I think serves to show us that winter has finally arrived in the Seven Kindoms. In this moment, we are also reminded that the greatest conflict is not actually the fight for the Iron Throne, but it is instead the White Walkers.

The end of the trailer got me the most excited for season seven because it simply left me wanting more. I’ve probably seen the teaser at least a hundred times by now because as of right now, it is the only thing that can hold me over until July, unless I spend a weekend binge watching seasons one through six again for the umpteenth time.

Despite the excitement surrounding the trailer, it is also a depressing reminder that season seven is the next to last season of the entire series. However, because of this, I am sure it will be the best one yet, packed full of action and of course death.

As for who do I think ends up sitting on the Iron Throne at the end? My bets are on Cersei or Daenerys. It would be nice to see a woman as holding the most power on one of the most popular shows on television. July can’t come fast enough.
