The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Wrestling Team had eight wrestlers place at the Wolfpack Open in Raleigh, N.C. Sunday. The placements ranged from 2nd to 6th place with senior Connor Tolley, Franklin, Ind., leading the Mocs.
Tolley won three matches against wrestlers from Davidson, GWU, and North Carolina State in the 285-pound division. The nail-biting overtime victory that advanced him into the finals was against Deonte Wilson from North Carolina State. Tolley came up short to a match against Ceron Francisco from UVa in the finals, finishing runner-up.
Freshman Drew Nicholson, Memphis, placed third at 165-pound weight division in the Wolfpack Open with two close matches: a 7-6 decision against Appalachian State’s Carl Guess and a 7-6 victory against UNC-Pembroke’s Rodney Shepard.
Chris Debien, Cleveland, Tenn., placed fourth in the 141-pound bracket with a win against Alex Urquiza from North Carolina State and a win against Isaiah Royal. Freshman Mason Wallace, Manhattan, Kan., had four wins at the 149-pound class.
Seniors Rodney Jones, Duluth, Ga. (197), Alonzo Allen, Conyers, Ga. (125), junior Jake Huffine, Catersville, Ga. (133) and sophomore Fabian Gutierrez, Commerce City, Colo. (125), all placed sixth.
Many of the placements placed in the Hokie Open on November 4, 2018.
Up next for the Mocs is the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Tournament on December 2 in Edwardsville, Ill.
