Softball season has just begun, and the Mocs were victorious in all three of their opening weekend games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament in Kennesaw, Ga.
Friday’s game matched UTC with the Ohio Bobcats, and after Ohio kicked off the game with a 1-0 lead, Mocs sophomore Aly Walker, Medina, Tenn., followed with a one-out RBI single to right field to tie things up 1-1. After that the Mocs took off and the Bobcats never caught up, leading to a final score was 6-3. Junior Amanda Beltran, Orange County, Calif., had a two-out RBI single to center, scoring senior Emma Sturdivant, Orange County, Calif., from third. Seven different UTC players finished with a hit, and the team had eight total for the day.
On Saturday, Chattanooga defeated Morehead State, 6-2, in their first game. UTC played as the home team and struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out RBI single from junior Taylor Chadwick, Ringgold, Ga., to take an early 1-0 lead. Morehead State took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Devan Brown, Ringgold, Ga., scored a two-out, solo homerun over the left field fence to make the score 2-2.
The fourth inning saw no scores for either team, but in the fifth, the Mocs scored four runs on five hits, taking a 6-2 lead and securing the win. Freshman Mariah Ramirez, La Habra, Calif., struck out four Morehead players and only allowed three hits in four innings.
During game two against Eastern Illinois, the first four innings were scoreless until junior Hailie Williamson, Soddy Daisy, Tenn., sacrificed a fly in the top of the fifth to take the lead 1-0. After two outs and freshman Gracie Kruse, Ringgold, Ga.,at second base, Williamson had an RBI single to right center that scored Kruse and put the Mocs ahead 2-1, winning the game.
This season marks the third in the last five years that UTC won their first three games.
