Mocs tennis completes home weekend sweep

By Danny Webb, Staff Writer —

The Chattanooga men’s tennis team took care of business at home this weekend, sweeping North Alabama on Friday afternoon and Austin Peay on Saturday night.

These two emphatic wins were the first victories of the season for the Mocs, moving them to 2-3 on the year. Head coach Chuck Merzbacher said he was proud of the way his team performed and acknowledged that both of the weekend’s opponents played well and didn’t make things easy.

The victory on Friday got rolling with Pablo Llebeili, Anatuya Argentina, and Jacob Marshall, Bristol, TN. scoring a 6-1 win in doubles. The other two doubles teams did their jobs as well completing their matches soon after with wins of 6-2 and [7-6(6)] to finish off the sweep.

No.3 Kerim Hyatt, Charleston, SC got things started in the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. All of his teammates followed him up with victories of their own including No.1 Niklas Gerdes, Geestland, Germany, who went down to the wire to get his 7-5, 6-3 win and finish the night off for the Mocs.

Saturday was more of the same. This time it was Simon Bustamante, Guayaquil, Ecuador and Kerim Hyatt, Charleston, SC starting off the sweep of Austin Peay with a 6-2 doubles win.

The night did not end without a little bit of drama however, as it took a three set battle for the winner to be decided between Pablo Llebeili and his opponent, Hunter Samuels, Overland Park, Kan. in singles. Llebeili fought back after losing the first set and clinched the match (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).

“Guys have been working hard so they deserve some momentum here,” said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.

Junior Niklas Gerdes echoed his coach’s statements about gaining momentum, adding that “everyone played well and took control of the court.”

The Mocs will look to continue to have success at home when Belmont comes to town for an in-state matchup at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
