The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Mocs Men’s Tennis team opened up their Spring 2020 season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama against the Crimson Tide.

They started off their tournament against the Tide by doing the double’s matches followed by the singles matches. 

In the first double match Alabama’s Patrick Kaukovalta and Zhe Zou defeated Chattanooga’s Kerim Hyatt, Charleston, S.C., and Simon Bustamante, Guayaquil, Ecuador, with a final score of 6-4. 

In the second match, Chattanooga’s Niklas Gerdes, Geestland, Germany, with Tomas Rodriguez, Buenos Aires, Argentina, defeated Alabama’s Jermey Gschwendtner and Riccardo Rubio with a final score of 6-3. 

In match three Alabama’s Sam Fischer and Marcelo Sepulveda defeated Chattanooga’s Jermey Dewald, Franklin, Tenn., and Luke Plaisted, Hixson, Tenn., with a score of 7-5.

The night ended with the singles matches. 

In the first single match Chattanooga’s Gerdes defeated Alabama’s Rubio in two sets with  scores of 6-0, 6-4. 

In the second singles match Alabama’s Zhe Zou defeated Chattanooga’s Rodriguez in two sets of final scores of 6-3 and 6-2. 

In the third singles match Alabama’s Patrick Kaukovalta defeated Chattanooga’s Hyatt in two sets of a final score of 6-2, 6-1. 

In the fourth singles match Alabama’s Jermey Gschwendtner defeated Chattanooga’s Dewald in two sets of a final score of 6-3, 6-2. 

In the fifth singles match Alabama’s Marcelo Sepulvada defeated Chattanooga’s Jacob Marshall, Bristol, Tenn., in two sets of a final score of 6-3, 6-2. 

In the sixth and final singles match Alabama’s Avi Shugar defeated Chattanooga’s Kaisei Kuroki, Tokyo, Japan, in two sets of a final score of 6-0, 6-4. 

Next week on Jan. 25, Chattanooga Men’s Tennis team squares off against Austin Peay University on the road in Clarksville, Tenn.
