The Mocs wrestling team won this weekend in impressive fashion, defeating VMI 29-9
The Mocs were victorious in 7 of 10 bouts and improved their Southern Conference record to 3-0. They ran out to a 16-0 lead led by wins from Franco Valdes, Miami, Fl., at 133 (5-3) and Mason Wallace, Manhattan, Ks., at 141 (15-5 major decision).
The number 23 ranked wrestler at 149, Tanner Smith, New Carlisle, Oh., scored his second victory of the weekend, defeating VMI’s Job Chishko in a tight 5-4 decision. Sophomore Matthew Waddell Gilmore, Ga., executed his team-leading fifth pin of the year and secured his seventh win in his last nine matches. Senior Rodney Jones, Duluth, Ga., closed out the Mocs scoring with a major decision at 197.
Overall the Mocs were dominant and continued their perfect run in the SoCon thus far. They are improving each week and have real threats to make noise come NCAA tournament time.
The Mocs travel to Boone, North Carolina for a showdown with Appalachian State on Jan. 26.
