The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team continued its undefeated streak against Davidson at Maclellan Gym on Sunday. The Mocs improved their Southern Conference record to 2-0 with a 34-9 win over the Wildcats.
Senior Alonzo Allen, Conyers, Ga., started the day with an easy win at 125 because the Wildcats took a forfeit. Next up was Junior Jake Huffine, Cartersville, Ga., who lost to Davidson’s Kyle Gorant at 133. The final score of the match was 8-2, with Gorant scoring a decision at the end.
Junior Chris Debien, Cleveland, Tenn., had an exciting match at 141 against Caleb Ziebell. Debien started the match with three takedowns in the first period. He then finalized the match with another takedown at 4:25, giving the Mocs a lead of 12-3.
Freshman Tanner Smith, New Carlisle, Ohio, had a 10-2 major decision win on his 21st birthday against Aidan Conroy at 149. Freshman Drew Nicholson, Memphis, Tenn., had a 20-5 tech fall over Erik Eva at 165, giving him an overall mark at 2-0 in the SoCon.
Freshman Hunter Fortner, Knoxville, Tenn., won the match against Noah Satterfield with a pin at 174, tying his SoCon mark to 1-1. Seniors Rodney Jones, Duluth, Ga. and Connor Tolley, Franklin, Ind., had wins at 197 and 285. Both Seniors are now 2-0 in the SoCon. The Mocs are currently in first place in the SoCon standings with Campbell and The Citadel sitting at 1-0. Up next for the Mocs trip to Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State next weekend.
