New English Club Focuses on Inclusion

By Charlye White, Staff Writer —

The UTC English Department has a new English club for students who are interested in language and literature, creative writing, and professional writing.

The club originated as Sigma Tau Delta, only accepting honors students with an outstanding GPA and a fee to be initiated.

“We want to try to make it more democratic, in the pass it was an honors club but if you were a freshman you were unable to come, and you had to pay an 80 dollar initiation fee,”  UTC Assistant Professor Dr. Joseph Jordan said

Sigma Tau Delta is now a student steering community of about six honors students who meet bi-weekly to discuss student concerns.

After a group of teachers and students discussed the reformation of the club, it was put into effect this year. So far students have had monthly teas and traveled to Atlanta for poetry readings. They have also held a debate on culture appropriation after discussing a poem that was published in July by an author who attempted to capture the perspective of an American homeless person.

The English club now has about 40-50 members and is looking for more students who are interested in joining. Students interested in joining the club can contact the English club advisor Dr. Jordan by email at joseph-p-jordan@utc.edu.
