New faculty start year with big hopes

By Isabella Patta, Chattanooga, Tenn. —

As students begin to look away from their printed class schedules, they might notice some new faces roaming around the University.

The School of Education hired Dr. Renee Murley as its new director, while the communications department welcomed Dr. Jack Zibluk as the new department head in August and Craig Davis filled the position of interim band director.

Renee Murley, director of the school of education, grew up in Athens, Al. She worked at the University of Memphis on the Lambuth campus for 15 years, before she transferred to UTC this summer. Murley was the associate chair for Instruction Curriculum and Leadership at the Lambuth Campus.

Murley accepted the job after hearing great things about UTC and she knew that UTC wanted to change the education program.

“I had experience implementing some of the changes [UTC] wanted,” Murley said. “We will be moving toward an extended placement in the field to better prepare the student teachers.”

Murley attended Freed-Hardeman University for her bachelors in elementary education and her masters in curriculum. She attended the University of Memphis for a N.Ed.D. in Instruction Curriculum and Leadership.

He still works for National Geographic and has articles published in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

“UTC was the best fit; [it] values individuals and [I] am here for students first and foremost,” said Zibluk. “This opportunity was too good to turn down, and I [hope] to continue to make a difference.”

Zibluk has gone on trips to India, Ireland, Greece, Turkey, Italy and the United Kingdom with students and plans to continue to travel with UTC students and grow international opportunities in the university.
