Oktoberfest kicks off with run to benefit catholic school

By Erin Myers, Chattanooga, TN—The celebration of Chattanooga’s Oktoberfest begins next weekend with the Ram Run, presented by Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School Saturday, Oct. 13th.

“All proceeds from the Ram Run will benefit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School,” Coordinator Karen Smith said. “The mission of OLPH School and faith community is to provide a Catholic education that fosters a relationship with God and enables students to become confident, lifelong learners.  This is a great way to give back to the local area, and it would be great to have more students from the UTC community participate.”

The run consists of two parts, Smith said.

The first is a one mile Fun Run for Kids, at 8:30 a.m, which will be a fun, untimed family event, Smith said. In addition to the Fun Run, there is also a 5k, which will begin at 9 a.m, she said.

“The course is certified and Chattanooga Track Club will be the official timekeepers for this event” Smith said. “Our Lady of Perpetual Help emphasizes that all ages are invited to attend.”

In addition to the race, the Ram Run will include refreshments, door prizes, and awards following the race. Smith said.

All youth members of the Fun Run will receive a ribbon, and there will also be awards given according to category including an overall award, age 14 and under, between the ages 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, a Masters award (participants between ages 40-49) and a Grandmasters award (those over 50), she said.

“The Ram Run is a fun event that is held just before the Chattanooga Market opens for the Chattanooga Oktoberfest,” Smith said.  “Starting at 10 a.m., the 11th Annual Chattanooga Oktoberfest gets underway. It is the region’s largest and oldest German celebration.”

The Chattanooga Oktoberfest features live music, local and seasonal brews, authentic Bavarian food and an Oompah band, and admission is free to all of these events, Smith said.

“Along with the sights and sounds, as well as the yummy smells of Oktoberfest, there are hundreds of local vendors sells a variety of handcrafted art,” she said. “We hope to see you there.”

The Ram Run will be held Oct. 13th, kicking off the Chattanooga Oktoberfest, which will be Oct.13th and 14th. The registration price for the Ram Run 5k is $20 for adults and $15 for children under 14 years of age, whereas the price for the one mile Fun Run is 10 dollars.

Registration for both of these runs will begin the morning of October 13th, at 7:30 at the First Tennessee Pavilion.  However, Smith said participants are encouraged to register online through active.com, or their website: www.oktoberfestramrun.com.
