Playing the Game: How to game your entire summer away and ignore the sun

Hayden Seay, Chattanooga, Tenn. – With many students facing the prospect of not having much to do throughout the summer, there is one thing that can help fill much of that void: RPGs, or role-playing games. While some RPGs are one-off experiences, many of the biggest series are those that have many titles under their belts and have been around for a long time, sometimes as far back as the 90s. These games require a massive amount of time just to complete their story modes, and even longer to do almost everything they offer. With that in mind here are some of the best RPGs to waste your entire summer on.

The Souls Series – Demon Souls, Dark Souls I, II and III:

If there is one series that will last you an entire summer, it’s definitely the Souls series. While the four games take hundreds of hours to complete, set in four entirely different worlds, including Boletaria, Lordran, Drangleic and Lothric, which are inhabited by countless npcs, enemies and bosses, there is one factor that will extend your journeys: You are going to die, over and over again. Whether it’s being attacked in a flurry by the first undead you encounter, or at the hands of one of the series’ many terrifying bosses, there’s no escape from Death’s grasp.

The Elder Scrolls – Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim:

This is the big one. If you start with “Elder Scrolls: Arena” and end with “Skyrim,” you’ll probably be playing this series well past this summer and well into the year after next. The series boasts an unimaginable amount of things to do, including spelunking, getting arrested by omnipresent guards, slaying demons and building a real estate empire. The series’ universe is vast and filled with many different beings, and contains a massive lore that includes hundreds of readable books scattered throughout the world.

Fallout Series – Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas and 4:

Set in a world that never truly left the 50s, the Fallout series focuses on a vast post-apocalyptic world and those who survived the fallout from an all out nuclear war. The series is set in the United States, with its most recent recent titles taking place in the ruins of Washington D.C., New Vegas and the Commonwealth, which includes Boston. After emerging from the underground vaults, the series is filled with innumerable characters and oftentimes unforgettable and heartbreaking storylines.

Borderlands – Borderlands 1, 2 and the Pre-Sequel:

Borderlands caught the gaming world by surprise in 2009 when it combined traditional RPG elements with humor and the post-apocalyptic world of Pandora. One of the series’ biggest features is its loot system, in which you can find millions of randomly generated guns.
