Summers in Chattanooga can be a blast from the awesome hiking trails to the live music scene. For many college students it may one of the first one summers spent away from their hometown and family. In order to get the most out of your time in downtown Chattanooga, here are some upcoming changes and events to get your summer plans started.

Green Spaces

One of the new additions to Downtown Chattanooga coming this summer is the opening of Miller Park. For those who have not noticed the large construction project at the corner of MLK and Georgia, Miller Park has been closed for the last year for a major makeover. Once a place rarely used by the UTC community, it will reopen in July to be a large green space complete with a new stage and rock outcropping. Since it is so close to campus, I hope there will be plenty of new opportunity for our students to enjoy it this summer and for years to come. Whether it is working on homework, seeing a concert and just enjoying the beautiful trees, Miller Park will definitely be a great place to hang this summer.

Music

In addition to Riverbend which occurs each summer in Chattanooga, there are some great spots downtown to listen to live music. For one, Nightfall is a great source of weekly entertainment with shows each Friday in Miller Plaza through the summer months. Other places with great live music include JJ Bohemia, Ziggy’s and The Westin. This year, Riverbend will take place June 8th through the 16th and you can purchase your tickets here.

Outdoor activities

For those interested in the outdoor opportunities that come along with spending a summer in Chattanooga, there are so many hiking, biking and water opportunities in the city.

In addition to the beautiful River Walk that spans along the downtown limits and beyond, there are several hiking trails close to campus. Some include Blue Blazes Trail, the Bluff Trail and Lula Lake. For those looking to camp for the weekend, Fall Creek Falls has always been a great spot that is just far enough away to feel like you’ve had a weekend to unwind. One of the best things about being enrolled at UTC is that you have UTC Outdoors as a . Located in the ARC, UTC Outdoors provides outdoor equipment at an extremely discount rate and provides free classes and trips. A full list of summer activities with UTC Outdoors can be found here.

Regardless of how you choose to spend your summer break in the scenic city be sure to make the most of it. There are so many ways to stay active and entertained in Downtown Chattanooga so enjoy it and see you guys in August!
