Men’s and women’s tennis teams finished their seasons this past weekend in the SoCon Championship Tournament here in Chattanooga. Both teams concluded their season with 4-0 defeats in their final matches. The men fell at the hands of Mercer, while Furman ousted the women’s team.
UTC started the tournament strong, taking on Mercer on Friday, April 20.
Junior Caroline Hall, Atlanta, Georgia, and freshman Bogdana Zaporozhets, Kiev, Ukraine, fought hard for a 6-2 victory at number two.
Later in the day, freshman Emma Van Hee, Tournai, Belgium, and senior Samantha Caswell, Lookout Mountain, Georgia, rallied back from being down 4-3 to defeat Grace Korta and Katie Sidor of Mercer 6-4.
Junior Delaney Edwards, Lighthouse Point, Florida, also did her part in the Mocs match victory. Edwards won 6-2 and 6-4, and No. 3. Van Hee went on to win at number five and Zaporozhets at number six.
UTC defeated Mercer 4-0.
“That was a battle,” said Head Coach Chad Camper. “We knew going in, it was going to be a difficult match.”
On the next day, UTC fell to Furman to finish their season. While the final score was not in favor of the Mocs, they fought hard. Caswell battled back after falling down 3-0. She was able to work the score back to 4-4. Similarly, Zaporoshets evened her match 5-2 in the second and Tamri Chalaganidze, Tbilisi, Georgia, led the the second set of her bout at No.4. Georgie Walker of Furman was able to break Van Hee’s four match winning streak by beating her 6-4, 6-3.
The men were not able to progress any further than their first match in the tournament. Mercer defeated UTC 4-0 on Friday, April, 20.
Simon Bustamante, Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Jacob Marshall, Bristol, Tennessee, were defeated 6-1 in doubles competition.
Paul Lahue, Memphis, Tennessee, and Cooper Long, Hixson, Tennessee, also fell in their doubles match, 6-2.
The Mocs lost four singles matches, which were deciding factors in the final match score. Niklas Gerdes, Geestland, Germany, however, was leading at his number one, 6-4 and 2-1, before Mercer clinched the win.
The Season Comes to a Close
The women have fought hard all year for the UTC. They finish their season with a 10-8 overall record. The Mocs were able post an undefeated record at home this season, going 7-0, while struggling on the road, with a 2-6 away record. The women will look to build off of their successes going into next season.
The Men finish their season with an overall record of 8-16. This is the most wins in a season for Men’s Tennis at UTC since 2012.
