By Alina Hunter-Grah, Chattanooga, Tenn.— If you’re a communications major, then you have definitely heard of Dan Lothian, the former White House correspondent for CNN who’s been wandering through the classrooms of Frist Hall.

Lothian is a journalist who has written for a variety of news stations across the country including CNN, NBC, MSNBC, but began his career in Chattanooga at WDEF after getting his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Temple University.

The former CNN reporter arrived at UTC in the fall of 2014. Since then, Lothian has been the subject of many questionnaires from communications students, given feedback on work done by students within the department, and has given a speech or two to the rest of the university.

“It’s actually a two way street for me,” said Lothian. “I know that when I was sitting where you are, I loved to hear from people who were there and doing crazy stuff. It was always fascinating to me. But I also feel like it’s not just about me having an impact, but also getting something from the students.”

Lothian’s biggest advice is one of self-confidence.

“Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something,” said Lothian. “You see all these sayings like ‘Do what you want.’ but there is a little bit of truth to that. You really have to do what you’re passionate about.”

Lothian plans to continue to give talks at UTC every so often for years to come.
