By Taylor Branch, Chattanooga, Tenn.,—Ontario, Canada native Teghan Henderson is having huge success on the track this year, already dominating the conference as a redshirt freshman.

She has come a long way from home to become a Moc, and has seen immediate success on the track being named SoCon All Freshman team.

Teghan Henderson, Ontario, Canada, looks to continue her dominance at the SoCon Championships.

“After coming down on a visit here, I just really fell in love with the city and the team,” Henderson said.

She recently set a school record in the women’s 5000 meter run at the Stanford Invitational and posted an impressive school-record time of 16:13.03, nearly seven seconds faster than the previous mark set by Kathleen Turchin in the 2007 season.

“My goal going into the race was to break 16:30.00,” Henderson said. “I was trying to do the math in my head throughout the race, when I saw that I was at 15 minutes on the dot going into the last lap I knew that I was going for a record.”

Henderson led the race from start to finish, winning her heat by more than 18 seconds. Her achievements continue as she also earned double SoCon Honors, with Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week as well as the Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week awards.

“Winning the track athlete was of course nice,” Henderson said. “It’s a great track accomplishment, but the Student Athlete awards shows the effort I‘ve put into my grades.”

She is currently a business management major and holds a 3.87 GPA.  Henderson said that she is looking forward to her remaining years here at UTC and hopes to improve her game even more, continuing her dominance for the Mocs.

The Running Mocs will continue preparations for the Southern Conference Championships on April 26 in Spartanburg, S.C.
