By Andrea Clifton, Chattanooga, TN—UTC Outdoors staff are preparing for the upcoming annual red eye ski and snowboarding trips.
There will be four day trips on January 25, February 1, 15, and 22, and also a longer spring break trip from
March 8 to 14.
Victoria Hunter, senior, said, “I am really excited because I love the outdoors, and it is hard to experience the outdoors in the winter time unless you have all this equipment, but luckily UTC does.”
Muller and her staff are taking up to 30 students on the January 25, February 1 and 22 trips, and only taking 20 on February 15.
For those planning on attending, Anna Muller, coordinator of outdoor programming, said, “The earlier you get here the better.”
The red eye trips last a day and travelers are expected to meet by five in the morning to leave for the nearly five hour trip to Beach Mountain, NC.
Austin Weber, sophomore, said, “We try to do most of the work before the day of the trip. We get everybody’s boot and snowboard sizes ready before they get here.”
The Spring Break trip is at the Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort. Those staying the six nights will be lodging in a ski in/ski out condo.
Students going on the red eye trips are expected to cover the $50 lift fee, either $18 ski rental or $25 snowboard rental, and will need to either bring or buy their meals.
However, UTC Outdoors will be renting out their 20 snowboards for the trips on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Spring Break trip includes six nights of lodging, meals, five-day lift pass, snowboard rental, as well as transportation for $650.
“I have never been skiing or snowboarding, but I love outdoor adventures, so I am very excited.” said Susan Willis, freshman who signed up for one of the red eye trips.
The staff are expecting beginners as well as experienced snowboarders and skiers. Bennett Benson, a recent graduate of UTC and current UTC Outdoor staff member, said, “We will coach everybody all the way down the mountain.”
Students interested can sign up in the UTC Outdoors office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Any additional information on these and other winter trips happening soon can be found on their website at www.utc.edu/campus-recreation/utc-outdoors.
