UTC is in the process of making plans to erect a new building for Health Science on the corner of East 3rd Street and Palmetto Avenue.
Kenny Tyler, director of Engineering and Planning Services, said UTC is teaming up with Erlanger Hospital to build a new Health Science Center.
“This building will be acting as a connection with Erlanger and UTC to get closer ties,” he said.
The project is planned to be 204,000 square feet in size, with a cost of $62 million and a five year completion timeline. Tyler said that the project is at the hands of the State for funding.
The extra costs for this building are to cover for the utility work, water systems and land acquisition for part of the lot. He added this building will include an estimated 500 space parking deck.
Tyler said the programs that will be relocated into this building are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, the School of Nursing, Health and Human Practices and others. He also stated UTC will be teaming up with more than just Erlanger Hospital.
“This will be a partnership with University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis as well as Children’s Hospital,” Tyler said.
The main goal driving this operation is to further anchor growth in all healthcare programs. Those in the nursing program currently see this as a change that will be beneficial when the process is complete.
Grace Dessinger, a sophomore from Athens, Tennessee said she could see the building bringing in more nursing students.
“I think more people would be accepted into the program and more nurses would come out of it,” she said.
She also suggested the building have simulations for the program because they currently have to do those in hospitals.
