UTC track and field places at TSU Invitational

By  Miles McNulty, Chattanooga, Tenn. —  The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s Distance Medley Relay teams finished second and fifth Saturday at the Tennessee State Invitational in Nashville.

The men’s A team finished second with a time of 10:27.60. The relay started first with senior Harry Smithers, Melbourne, Australia followed by sophomores Marquis Carter, Memphis and Trevor Janssen, Jordan Station, Ontario.

They anchored by senior graduate Nathan Wanuch, Missisauga, Ontario.

The men’s B team also had a very competitive finish.

“The B team was leading the A team after the first two legs, but I knew Trevor would step up and our senior leader Nathan would finish strong,” head coach Bill Gautier said to gomocs.com.

The B team was led off by senior Mark Cole, a graduate student from McKenzie, Tenn., and sophomore DeQuantez Sandifer, from Nashville.

Sophomore Matthew Marshall, Signal Mountain, Tenn., junior and Patrick O’Brien, Chattanooga, ran the final two legs.

Sandifer held the lead for the B team until Janssen passed his teammate Marshall to put the A team back in front. The team placed fifth and finished with a time of 10:39.51.

Freshman James Stovall, Cleveland, Tenn., who is also a member of the UTC football team, made his collegiate debut in the triple jump. Stovall held his own and placed 10th with a distance of 14.00m.

“Even after completing mandatory football workouts on Friday, he still did a great job,” Gautier said to gomocs.com.

In other events, sophomore Iman Isang, Atlanta, Ga., placed 11th in the men’s 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.08.

In the 200 meter dash, sophomores Tosin Ayotunde, Ooltewah, Tenn., and Geoff Nelson, Brentwood, Tenn., finished with the time 24.51 and  25.11 respectively.

In the 800 meter sophomores Zack Darby, Knoxville, and Austin Ethridge, Signal Mountain, Tenn., finished at 2:04.88 and 2:06.38.

UTC’s track and field team will return to action this weekend in the Samford Invitational.

Both the men’s and women’s track and field team will be working hard to finish with qualifying times for the upcoming Southern Conference Tournament on March 1.
