The UTC Women’s Soccer team took a 2-0 victory from Western Carolina on Friday. The Mocs traveled to Cullowhee, North Carolina for the Southern Conference match.

After a scoreless first half, UTC’s former SoCon Freshman of the year, Chloe Arnold, Bristol, Tenn., got the scoring started early in the second half with a shot that she drilled past the goalkeeper from outside of the box. The beautiful game winner came off of a pass from Bailey Gale, Knoxville, who had just shaken free from her defender to slip the pass through to Arnold.

Things appeared to be coming down to the wire with the Mocs holding just a single goal lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. UTC doubled their lead in minute number 82 as two Mocs freshman teamed up to give some much needed insurance. Faith Gober, Mt. Juliet, Tenn., fired a shot towards the goal that was tapped in by Samantha Shaw, Columbia, S.C.

Ashton Shields, Arlington, Tenn., put on a clinic, racking up five saves in her shutout performance in goal for the Mocs. The Catamounts outshot the Mocs, but weren’t able to get anything past Shields. Shields was on the SoCon All-Freshman team in 2018, and ranked third for shutouts in a season in school history.
